Songwriting, my process

Okay!! I've written a song, a powerful song and I'm in what I call my "smug" phase, i.e. "Damn, this is a great song! I can't wait to get out and play it. Folks are going to go nuts about it!"

This phase is quickly followed by the "dutiful listener" phase, where my songwriter critical gut and ear comes into play. That sense that something is a little off.  Let me see - first verse, yeah, that's all good. Chorus, it could use a little tweaking but otherwise it's all there. Second verse, what the hell? This doesn't make any sense at all. Did I just write a verse using all place holder lines? Crap...

Back to work - writing is all about rewriting.

My songs are gifts I want to share, but a shoddy song speaks (sings?) volumes about me and the listener will never want to hear this one again.  That is not me goal, my goal is to have the listener want to hear it again and again and again.
